Information

Getting to Robe
Guests coming from Victoria or South Australia generally
drive their own car which means they enjoy a premium holiday without having to
pay for air fares or a rental car.
The following driving distances and times are one-way to Robe from the two closest state
capital cities. We recommend you use a road map or GPS device in addition to these directions.
Driving from ADELAIDE
Most direct route
(350km and 3 1/2 hours driving time)
Follow the freeway through the tunnel, through the Adelaide Hills, across the bridge over
the Murray River and through Tailem Bend, then 1km on the other side of Tailem Bend turn
right towards Meningie. Follow this road through Meningie, along the side of the beautiful
Coorong through both Salt Creek and Kingston and then on to Robe.
Scenic route
(350km and 3 1/2 - 4 hours driving time - sometimes there is a wait for the punt)
(This route goes through the Adelaide Hills where you can see freestone fences and
experience a ride on a vehicular punt across the Murray) Follow the freeway and take the
Mt Barker exit, at the T intersection turn right then across the bridge over the freeway and follow this road
through Mt Barker, through Wistow (dont turn right to Strathalbyn), through
Woodchester and after Woodchester turn left towards Wellington, on the way you will come
to Langhorne Creek, turn left at the T intersection to Wellington where you catch the
punt. The punt is free and operates 24 hours per day. Relax and wander
around on the punt as it takes you on the short trip across the Murray
River. On the other side of the river the road takes you to the main highway and on to
Meningie along the side of the beautiful Coorong through both Salt Creek and Kingston then
on to Robe.
Driving from MELBOURNE
Most direct route
(510km and 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 hours driving time)
This route avoids having to go through either
Geelong or Ballarat. Go over the
West Gate Bridge towards Geelong and follow the freeway to Geelong. While on the
freeway in metro Geelong take the Ballarat exit which becomes the Midland
Highway turn left to Bannockburn on the Midland Highway. Follow this road
through Bannockburn, Teesdale, Shelford, and Rokewood to Skipton. Turn left at
Skipton and follow this road (the Glenelg Highway) through Hamilton to
Casterton, at the other end of Casterton the road splits, go straight ahead to
Penola, at Penola turn right on the main street and left at the Shell Service
Station and follow this road to Robe.
Scenic route
(650km and 8½ hours)
Follow the spectacular Great Ocean Road to Warrnambool, then on to Port Fairy,
then Mt
Gambier to see the blue lake, then to Millicent and on to Robe. The reason this takes so
long is that the Great Ocean Road is very slow driving because of all of the curves,
however if you have the time, the views are stunning.
Flying to the CLOSEST
COMMERCIAL AIRPORT
(130km and 1¼ hours)
Guests can also fly on a commercial flight to Mt Gambier and rent a car from one of the
major car rental companies before driving on to Robe. The only commercial
airline
that services Mount Gambier is Regional Express (Rex).
Flying to ROBE AIR STRIP
(2km to Beachside and 4km to White Sails)
A few guests fly to the Robe air strip. There are no rental cars or taxis available in
Robe because most people drive here. We are happy to collect guests from the airport and
return them to the airport at the end of their stay. This restricts their movements to
walking so we recommend they stay at White Sails which is closer to the town
centre. Some guests overcome this by bringing pushbikes in their aircraft so
they can stay at one of our Long Beach properties.
Mobile Phone Reception
Telstra + Optus Digital Mobile Phone reception is excellent in most areas of Robe including our
properties.
If your Digital Mobile Phone is connected to a carrier other than these, please contact
your carrier for advice.
If you are bringing your mobile phone, don't forget your charger.
Internet Access + Email Access
We do not have Wi Fi
or internet lines in our properties however Telstra Wireless broadband works
well in Robe including our properties. (you will need a Telstra Broadband
internet USB stick or a phone with internet coverage). Broadband internet
access is available for free at the library using their computers or your own. Some
businesses in Robe also have free Wi Fi for customers. (Caledonian Inn and Union
Cafe).
Other gear you may want to bring
You may want to bring some things such as bathers, beach towel (we provide all other
linen), wetsuit, camera, sporting equipment, special DVDs to watch (a limited
range of DVDs is available for hire in Robe), iPod/CDs to play, special grocery
items that may not be available in Robe, or, books to read. Robe can be quite cool, even
on some summer evenings, so ensure you bring a jumper or coat. Reading
"Things to do in Robe" may prompt you to bring other things you may
want. Cash, Credit Cards and Banking
Many businesses in Robe accept
major credit cards and have eftpos facilities. Please note that withdrawal of
cash from Eftpos is limited in Robe.
There are two full service banks in Robe. Bank SA (Westpac Bank subsidiary) and
a Community branch of the Bendigo Bank are open week days. There are five ATMs
in town being at the BankSA bank which operates 24 hours a day, Community Bank
which also operates 24 hours per day, in the supermarket which operates during
opening hours 7 days per week, and the Robe Hotel and Caledonian Inn, both of
which are open until late 7 days per week.
Different Time Zone
South Australia is in a different time zone from Victoria and New South Wales. It is
half an hour behind at all times of the year. If driving from Victoria you will gain
half an hour on arriving and will lose half an hour on returning.
Arriving early enough to buy groceries
The Robe supermarket is open 7 days per week, however it does close at 7.30pm in
Summer and 6.30pm in non daylight savings times.
Arriving early enough to eat out
Most restaurants and takeaway food shops close or stop taking orders at around
8:00pm to 8:30pm and in winter this can be earlier.
